Care Instructions

Kuhler Care FAQ

Answers to your most common questions about caring for your handmade rope goods.

Cleaning & Spot Care

  • Can I put my Kuhler product in the washing machine?
Technically, cotton rope products are washable—but I don’t recommend it. I haven’t tested machine washing because it may cause yellowing or compromise the shape. Gentle hand care is best.
  • How do I clean light dirt or stains?
Use a vacuum or soft brush (an old toothbrush works well!) to loosen dirt or dust. For wet spots, gently dab with a clean cloth. Kuhler cotton cord is slightly hydro-repellent—if you catch spills early, you’ll likely wipe them away with no trace.
  • What kind of soap or detergent should I use?
Choose a chemical-free option like Boerseep, diluted dish soap, or gentle laundry detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals and always dilute cleaners before use.
  • Can I use bleach or stain remover?
Please don’t—bleach can damage the rope. For stubborn spots, try a paste made from baking soda and Boerseep or dish soap.
  • Can I vacuum my basket?
Absolutely. A vacuum is great for removing dust or crumbs. A lint roller works well too, especially for pet hair.

Everyday Use & Maintenance

  • Will my product fade in the sun?
It shouldn’t—Kuhler products hold up well under light exposure. That said, avoid drying or storing them in direct sun for long periods.
  • Can I use my basket outdoors or in a bathroom?
Sure! Just know that outdoor exposure will shorten its lifespan. In bathrooms or damp spaces, tuck a silica packet inside to absorb moisture. Replace it if it becomes lumpy or damaged.
  • How do I reshape my product?
A little gentle coaxing with your hands is all it takes. Kuhler pieces are flexible by design.
  • What if it gets soaked?
Rinse with clean water, shake out excess, and let it air-dry completely in a well-ventilated spot—preferably out of direct sunlight. Water won’t damage the rope if it’s dried promptly.
  • Can I iron my basket?
Yes, on a low setting. A handheld steamer is even better—steam the area, let it cool, then shape it by hand.
  • How do I freshen up a stored basket?
Vacuum it or give it a light steam. You can also use a clear, non-dyed linen spray inside the basket. Pinterest is full of lovely DIY recipes for linen sprays!

Materials & Sustainability

  • What are Kuhler baskets made of?
Most are made from unbleached, untreated natural cotton cord (sourced in South Africa) or natural jute. I use high-quality Seralon thread—durable, low-stretch, and heat resistant.
  • Will the threads or cord bleed color?
No worries here. I don’t dye the cords, and the Seralon thread is colorfast. You shouldn’t experience any bleeding or staining.
  • What makes Kuhler eco-conscious?
I run a low-waste, home-based studio. Off-cuts and scraps are saved for future creative use. Used needles and thread spools are recycled, and I prioritize local sourcing wherever possible.

Product-Specific Guidance

  • Are all your products washable?
Only cotton rope products are technically washable—but again, machine washing is not recommended. I’ll be sure to share tested results if this changes.
  • How should I care for jute pieces?
Jute needs a bit more attention:
    • Keep it dry—avoid high humidity or spills
    • Vacuum regularly to prevent dirt build-up
    • Avoid prolonged direct sun exposure
    • If you see frayed edges, trim with scissors (don’t pull)
  • Do you use leather, wood, or painted finishes?
Nope. All Kuhler goods are textile-based and stitching-only.
  • Can I use a rope basket as a planter?
Yes! Just add a plastic liner to protect the cord. You can also pre-treat it with a waterproofing spray like Scotchgard for extra protection.

Longevity & Repurposing

  • How long will my Kuhler product last?
With care, for years. I still use some of the very first pieces I made—more than 4 years ago—and they’re still going strong.
  • Can I repair a frayed thread or pulled stitch?
Yes. If you sew by hand, use a matching thread and secure the loose end. For more complex repairs, feel free to reach out—I’m happy to help.
  • How should I store my products?
Keep them in a dry, cool place when not in use. Avoid damp storage to prevent mildew.
  • Can I reuse or repurpose my basket?
Definitely. Kuhler pieces are made to adapt with your life—reshaped, reused, or passed on. If you no longer need yours, consider donating it so it can bring order and beauty to someone else’s space.
